It is the end of another year and while we look back and appreciate the amazing games that have been released in 2017, we cannot help but jump aboard the hype train for the exciting titles to be released next year. It would not be too far-fetched to say that 2018 is likely to be the year of Open-World Games. Improved graphics engines and internet speeds have made it possible for even small indie developers to dream bigger and bolder to create expansive and immersive worlds where players can create stories and adventures of their own. Here is a list of the most anticipated Open-World Games that we will be able to play in 2018. Rank this list in the order of how likely these titles are to live up to the hype!

Anthem
#11.0Anthem is an upcoming online multiplayer action role-playing video game being developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts. It is slated for a 2018 release on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The game is set in an open world environment in which the player takes the role of a Freelancer donning fully customizable exosuits called Javelins. These suits can be customized to have various unique weapons and superhuman abilities. Two classes of Javelins were shown during Anthem's presentation at Microsoft's E3 2017 Conference. One was the Ranger, which is an all-around and balanced Javelin, and the Colossus, which is a larger and more heavily armored Javelin made to fill in more of a tanking role. The game features both single-player and co-operative multiplayer elements in a "shared-world" that can have up to four squad members per team. Teams can fight savage beasts and ruthless marauders while exploring lost ruins and experiencing massive, world-altering terrain occurrences, such as "Shaper Storms".
State of Decay 2
#22.0State of Decay 2 is an upcoming zombie survival game in which gameplay is experienced from a third-person view. The game is set in an open world environment and features cooperative gameplay with up to three other players. The game is developed by Undead Labs and published by Microsoft Studios. It is a sequel to the 2013 video game State of Decay. The game is scheduled to be released in Spring 2018 for Microsoft Windows and the Xbox One video game console.
Beyond Good and Evil 2
#33.0Beyond Good and Evil 2 is an upcoming action-adventure video game in development by Ubisoft Montpellier and to be published by Ubisoft, it is a prequel to 2003's Beyond Good & Evil. Its development was characterized in the media by uncertainty, doubt and rumours about the game's future, until it was officially announced at Ubisoft's E3 2017 conference, although no release window or target platform has been revealed. The game is played from a third-person perspective which takes place a few generations prior to the events of Beyond Good & Evil. It has more traditional role-playing elements compared to the first game; the player will generate a character that starts the game "at the very bottom of the social system". The character can be male or female. As the player completes various tasks, they will improve in various attributes, and gain spacecraft and crew members which they can also improve over time. The player will visit planets that have their own societies, and by completing tasks on these planets, will gain new technologies or other facets to improve their spacecraft. Ancel said that they do anticipate that there will be a narrative element that includes fixed story events as well as events based on what decisions the player had made in exploring planets. The game will have single-player and cooperative player support; even as a single-player, the player participates in a shared universe, with some events affecting all players at the same time.
Skull and Bones
#44.0Skull & Bones is an upcoming tactical action video game developed by Ubisoft Singapore and published by Ubisoft for release on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in Q3/Q4 2018. The game revolves around piracy and naval warfare. The game is set in an open world environment and played from a third-person perspective. Players take control of a customizable pirate captain, and may choose to sail the Indian Ocean by themselves and set off on a single-player campaign, or accumulate up to five other players to ally or engage in combat with in Disputed Waters. Wind positioning can be assessed to gain an advantage in battle. Players may collect additional ships throughout the game, such as sloops-of-war, frigates and brigantines, whose weapons include mortars, broadside cannons, and rockets. Ships can be charged into with brute force and boarded. The rate of inflicted damage is gauged by the health bar. A core component is the multiplayer mode Loot Hunt, where two groups of players are challenged in treasure hunting to further accumulate their riches. Each given ship's crow's nest is scalable for use as a lookout point, and spyglasses can be availed of as well. Microtransactions will be an added feature in the game.
Shadow of the Colossus

Cited as an influential title in the video game industry and one of the greatest games of all time, Shadow of the Colossus is often regarded as an important example of video game as art due to its minimalist landscape designs, immersive gameplay and emotional journey. It received wide critical acclaim by the media and was met with strong sales compared to Ico, due in part to a larger marketing campaign. The soundtrack was also widely praised. The game won several awards for its audio, design, and overall quality. The game's storyline focuses on a young man named Wander who enters a forbidden land. Wander must travel across a vast expanse on horseback and defeat sixteen massive beings, known simply as colossi, in order to restore the life of a girl named Mono. The game is unusual within the action-adventure genre in that there are no towns or dungeons to explore, no characters with whom to interact, and no enemies to defeat other than the colossi. Shadow of the Colossus has been described as a puzzle game, as each colossus' weakness must be identified and exploited before it can be defeated.
Days Gone

It will be the first intellectual property created by SIE Bend Studio since Syphon Filter in 1999 and the first home console game developed by the studio since Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow in 2010. Unreal Engine 4 is being used for the game's development. The game is set in a post-apocalyptic open world environment and played from a third-person perspective. The player takes control of the game's protagonist "Deacon St. John" (Samuel Witwer), a drifter and former bounty hunter who prefers to live a dangerous life on the road over living in wilderness encampments.The game takes place two years after a global pandemic occurred which killed almost all of humanity, and transformed millions of others into "Freakers", mindless zombie-like creatures that are quickly evolving. In the E3 2016 stage demo of the game, two types of "Freakers" were revealed, Newts and Hordes. As the game is set in an open world environment, the player can use multiple ways to complete objectives, such as utilizing stealth for silent takedowns or taking the aggressive approach by using long and short ranged weapons. A dynamic weather system and day-night cycle will also feature in the game, which will affect the gameplay making "Freakers" weak and slow during the day-time but fast and aggressive during the night. Vehicles such as motorbikes can be used to explore the game's world. The player is able to craft new items to improve combat efficiency.
Far Cry 5

It is the eleventh installment and the fifth main title in the Far Cry series. It is scheduled to be released on March 27, 2018. Similar to its predecessors, Far Cry 5 is an action-adventure first-person shooter set in an open world environment which the player can explore freely on foot or via various vehicles. Unlike previous titles in the series where the player takes on the role of a set character, the game will feature a new character creator, which the player can use to customize their character's appearances, gender and skin tone. The player will have a variety of ranged and explosive weapons to fight against enemies, while the game will place a renewed emphasis on close-quarters combat compared to previous Far Cry titles by introducing a wider range of melee weapons. The game will also feature a recruitment system, in which the player can recruit locals in the county to fight alongside them similar to the "Buddy" system used in Far Cry 2. In this "Guns for Hire" system, the player needs to convince other locals to join their cause, and every companion fighter has their own unique skills and personalities. The player can also tame wild animals through the "Fang for Hire" system, previously introduced in Far Cry Primal. The tamed wildlife will assist the player in combat and follow the player's orders. Different wildlife will have different combat patterns. A fishing mechanic will also be introduced. The campaign can be played individually or with a partner through the game's cooperative multiplayer mode. The game will also feature a map editor, whose features have been expanded from previous titles. The game is set in the fictional Hope County, Montana, where a preacher named Joseph Seed has risen to prominence. Seed believes that he has been chosen to protect the people of Hope County from an "inevitable collapse" and has established a congregation called Eden's Gate. Ostensibly, this is to fulfill his mission of leading the people to salvation; in reality, Seed is a radical preacher and Eden's Gate is a militaristic doomsday cult. Under his rule, Eden's Gate has used both coercion and violence to forcibly convert the residents of Hope County, and intimidation to keep them from contacting the outside world for help. When an attempt to arrest Seed ends with the deaths of several lawmen, the player is swept into the armed conflict between Eden's Gate and the remaining Hope County residents, who are organizing themselves into a resistance movement. The player takes on the role of a sheriff's deputy who is part of the task force sent to Hope County to arrest Seed. Seed has assumed the title of "the Father" and maintains control over Hope County with the aid of his siblings, known as "the Heralds": Jacob, a former military officer that oversees their armed soldiers; John, a lawyer that has been able to acquire much of the land in Hope County for Eden's Gate; and Faith, who acts as a pacifist to bring the people to believe and trust in her older brother. The residents of Hope County opposed to Seed include Pastor Jeffries, a local church leader that has seen his congregation taken by Eden's Gate; Mary May, a bartender whose father was driven to suicide by the cult; and Nick Rye, a cropduster pilot who wants to eliminate the influence of the cult in order to build a better future for his children.

Monster Hunter: World

It will feature much larger maps, seamless transitions between zones in the map and four-player online co-op, and will also allow players worldwide to play together, a first in the series. In Monster Hunter: World, players assume the role of a hunter venturing to a new continent where they track down and slay ferocious beasts in heart-pounding battles. This new land and its diverse inhabitants play a critical role in each quest as players strategically use the surrounding environment including terrain, vegetation and wildlife to their advantage in battle or become hindered by the hazards they present. As a hunter, a player must use cunning and expertise to track and maneuver targets throughout the intense, evolving battles.
Marvel's Spider-Man

It features a persistent open world environment for free-roaming across a scaled-down recreation of the United States. The game allows players to control a variety of vehicles including cars, motorcycles, boats, and airplanes. The game will be released in mid 2018. Similar to its predecessor, The Crew 2 is a racing game. In the game, players assume control of a relatively unknown racer, who is trying to work his way to become successful in multiple disciplines. It features a persistent open world environment for racing and free-roaming across a scaled-down recreation of the contiguous United States. In addition to cars, players can also control other kinds of vehicles including planes, motorcycles, and boats. Each vehicle has their own control physics, meaning that gameplay is different when players are controlling different types of vehicles. Players can switch between controlling air, land and sea vehicles instantly. The game features four different hub worlds, with each having their own theme and playstyle. These themes include off-road, street racing, pro racing, and freestyle. Vehicle customization will also be featured in the game. Similar to the first game, it will place a huge emphasis on multiplayer. It also features a cooperative multiplayer mode, which allows players to join different rally raid events together. This mode can also be played solo with artificial intelligence.
GreedFall

An island paradise has been discovered by colonial forces from several distinct nations from fictional lands, but with magic and monsters. You play as a neutral Human who recently arrived at the island, able to ally yourself with either the native Elves who inhabit the land, or any of the foreign nations competing to conquer and colonize the "new" land. In the game you, alongside other settlers, mercenaries and treasure hunters, explore a remote island where the locals, who are fighting off invading settlers, are protected by supernatural beings. GreedFall is about combat, but it's also about diplomacy, deception and stealth. Your actions, from seemingly trivial choices to the most important political decisions, will influence and affect its course as well as the relationship between the different factions established on the island.
Star Citizen

Star Citizen and Squadron 42 are produced by Chris Roberts' company Cloud Imperium Games and its European counterpart Foundry 42 and marketed under the Cloud Imperium Games subsidiary Roberts Space Industries. Game development is financed by a record-breaking crowdfunding campaign and the pre-sale of game items and currency on the company's homepage. Development of Star Citizen began in 2011 and was originally planned for a release in 2014, and again in 2016. As of 2017, there is no official release date, and the game is still in active development. Squadron 42 was originally announced for a late 2015 release, but was delayed. As of December 2017, there is no definite release date.

A group of players travel and explore an open world via a pirate ship and assume different roles such as steering, hoisting sails, navigation, firing cannons and other tasks. Players will embark on quests, collect loot and engage in combat with other players. Sea of Thieves is a shared world game, which means groups of players will encounter each other regularly throughout their adventures. The game has a cartoonish art style and exaggerated physics that allow players to be shot out of ship cannons.

Dark and Light

Snail Games acquired the rights to the original Dark and Light in 2008. Currently the game is purchased and downloaded through the "Steam" game client. Once downloaded and run the player can select to connect to one of several dozen "Official" servers hosted by Snail Games or connect to in of an even larger list of privately hosted servers throughout the world. The servers are separated into PvE (Named "Wyrmslayer") and PvP (Named "Knight"). Players can also host their own server locally via the game client. Each server allows for the player to create only one custom character of Male or Female gender. There are three races (Human, Elf or Dwarf). Your Character's race determines your starting location. Once in game, the character is directed by a series of short quest narratives that help guide the player in learning the mechanics of the game. The learning curve can be tough at first and survival is the main goal in the beginning. Characters are effected by environmental and physical factors such as Hunger, thirst, climate temperature, day and night visuals, sleep deprivation and physical damage from attack or falling. Survival is accomplished by foraging for food and numerous resources such as berries, wood, stone, leather, meat and twine. As a Character progresses in levels, the player can designate points to various stats such as Health, Stamina, Mana and more. Crafting abilities also advance as the character levels. Players can craft tools, weapons, magic spells and structures that will allow for easier survival and foraging. Structures of various materials are able to be place into the game's with full player and creature interaction. Structures provide a base for storage of supplies and protection from attack. Structures can be destroyed by both players and NPC creatures under certain conditions. Animals in the game can be tamed and ridden. Boars, Horses, Griffins and even Dragons to name a few. Magic, Melee and mounted attacks are the main combat features. When your character dies you respawn at your starting city and all your items remain on your corpse. Any Player can claim the items from your corpse if they search you before you can return to your corpse. You do have the ability to change your re-spawn location later in the game.

That will come in handy as you will be able to explore many interiors with functioning useful businesses like supermarkets, gas stations, restaurants, auto repair shops and so forth. Of course all of that is only a background for a vibrant society, much like the real one, and you will need to earn your place in that community. Every character you meet has his own individual set of characteristics which will make each of them unique. You will need to discover and take advantage of who they are in order to build the best possible reputation for yourself. In Identity, players will have the freedom to do a variety of open world activities including karaoke, paintballing, and even allows players to get their own in-game job and career. The game will also allow players to customize their own homes, and supports the ability to place various pieces of furniture in the home, including couches, as well as televisions, and computers. The developers announced that Town Square will be released on March 21st, 2018.

Edge of Eternity

The environment is open world allowing for exploration and a branching story but with intense action turn-based battles. The game is currently in pre-alpha stages and is being developed by Midgar Studio, a game developing company based in France. The game, orginally set for Steam/PC, Mac and Linux will now also be developed for PS4 and XBox One. There is no release date at this time. The game is set on a planet by the name of Heryon. Heryon was once a peaceful world, consisting of three regions known as Junor, Astrya and Dehostra. Crystals gave the realms equal access to powerful magic powers and created a harmonious balance. Then a massive spaceship arrived one day and changed everything. Junor was attacked and their capital city was destroyed. Reynan, Grand General of Dehostra's armies too leadership for the defense of Heryon. He founded the Consortium and used the magic powers of the crystals to launch a counterattack. After several battles, the Consortium succeeded in pushing back the invadors but that wasn't enough. The invadors unleashed a terrible biological weapon that the people of Heryon soon called The Metal Sickness. 30 years later, the siege is still going on and Heryon lives in pain and fear of a new open war. The plague slowly turned all types of life forms into half organic, half mechanic creatures. Anyone suffering from the change was left in angonizing pain that would evetually drive them mad. With no available cure, the infected were banished from the cities and moved or forced to quarantine camps in Junor. Those who didn't make the journey were killed by scared villigers or became wondering deadly monsters. 20 years after the invasion first began, the Consortium considers themselves the rulers of Heryon and it's soldiers ruthlessly hunt all technology and slaughter anyone found with the plague. Only a few dare to question them. The game begins with Daryon, an adventurous student of the Royal Academy of Astrya where he meets Selen, a young woman from the nomad clans formed by the survivors of Junor. Both have been convicted for illegal use of technology and are being hunted by the Consortium. As they run for their lives, they will meet new allies and begin a journey that will change the fate of Heryon.
